[edit] Alternative Battery Research and BMS Systems

TOTAL-EV BMS

  • Fully configurable BMS parameters allow maximum flexibilty
    • Adjustable Cell High Voltage cutoff (typically 3.9v)
    • Adjustable Cell Balance Voltage (typically 3.8v)
    • Adjustable Cell Low Voltage warning (typicaly 2.4v)
  • Single, simple and elegant heads up display gives the operator access to important battery informatoin
    • Shows pack voltage, and status indicator
    • Backlight for night time viewing
    • Warning indicator at low-voltage threshold.
  • LTC6802 Chipset based, 12 cells per embedded board
    • Support "typical AC" DC systems at 268v (84 cells), using a 7 board stack
    • Support "typical highway" DC systems at 144v (48 cells), using a 4 board stack
    • Supports "typical NEV" DC systems at 72v (24 cells), using a 2 board stack
    • BMS solutions allow board stacking up to 120 cells.
  • Flash logging on to USB stick, records all relevant battery events, allows data analysis on computer, including time of day.
  • Current Monitor for state of charge (in prototype)

[edit] Overall Site EV Research Conclusions

This Website initially targeted data collection for an EV Conversion project or business. Research from this site has been consolidated into the following:

Conclusion Number 1: The Data collected so far indicates that use of Lead Acid batteries creates an inconvient truth - an unhappy EV. Lead Acid is a nice start, but doesn't have practial application outside the hobbiest. Lots of reasons, inlcuding short Lead battery life, high weight, difficult to maintain batteries, etc.

Conclusion Number 2: A NEW BATTERY TECHNOLOGY IS NEEDED. Lithium Is the only practical solution right now. And, there are a limited number of folks making large lithiums. Thundersky is the best option for the hobbiest conversion. Follow the discssion thread at http://www.convertthefuture.com/bbs/viewforum.php?f=14

Conclusion Number 3: Ev cost calculations are improving rapidly. See Calculations. Having a lead acid totally electric car has limited range, and costs that really dont compare to an ICE. Its a great environmental thought, but not quite practical.

Conclusion Number 4: There is no practical, and complete BMS for Highway capable EVs. This is the 144v range of vehicle that woudl use 100-200 A-hr size Li batteries. THERE IS MUCH WORK TO BE DONE HERE. This site is dedicated to that pursuit.

First, we need to get our batteries under control It has become clear the the biggest problem with EV's is the lack of a quality, off-the-shelf Battery Management Systems that can work for both 12 Lead Acid adn 3 V lithium. I have several project ideas in Battery Management Systems that are underway.

Plug in Hybrids are an excellent answer

  • Plug In Hybrid Technology This technology is good, and should work, but may be several years off. The prius is developing this, but has very limited range on electric only. The chevy volt is the right answer, but will it ever be produced?

Can we take a RAV-4 or CR-v 4wd and convert to hybrid/lithium. Is this practical and relatively economical?
